 Ask

Design the catalog for the 2005 Basquiat retrospective show at The Brooklyn Museum. Capture Basquiat’s energy and dynamism without creating a book design that is overly self-conscious in its execution.

 Solution

A varied design grid with multiple horizon lines to “hang” artwork along and an equally varied treatment of the art throughout (i.e. some paintings including stretchers, some cropped, and some full-bleed on page).

 Results

The design created a rhythm and pace that was not too rigid, full of energy, but still had a harmonious effect.

HOOPS

Four Decades of the Pro Game
by Walter Iooss Jr. for Abrams Books,
published November 1, 2005. Buy the book ›

 Ask

Design a photography book that showcases over four decades worth of one man’s photography, Walter Iooss Jr.

 Solution

A tall thin typeface paired with a ball like orange accent used in a subtle way and a simple, unadorned presentation of the iconic photography.

 Results

A book that feels like a pure expression of the game, where the design disappears and lets the stylistic difference of the photography seen over time tell the story.
